Overview
In Los Angeles and Orange County the sun beats on a roof for much of the year, and that heat goes straight into the attic. An attic that can’t vent gets hotter and more humid. Roofing materials age early, shingles can curl, blister and crack, moisture settles into the decking and insulation, and your air conditioner works harder to cool the rooms below. Everyday life adds to it, since showers, cooking and laundry all put moisture into the air. A working ventilation system is built to carry all of that out.
It works by keeping air moving. Cooler air comes in low, through vents at the eaves and soffits, and hot air leaves high, through vents at or near the ridge, so the flow continues as the roof heats up. The two sides have to match: exhaust vents with no intake, or intake blocked by insulation or paint, leave an attic stuffy no matter how many vents are on the roof. How can I tell if my attic isn’t ventilated well?
Common signs are upstairs rooms that stay hot, an air conditioner that runs nearly all day, a musty smell, damp insulation, stained decking and shingles that curl or blister. Some of these have other causes, so a roofer’s inspection, with photos, is the way to find out which one you have.
Do I need ridge vents or box vents?
It depends on your roof’s shape and the intake you already have. What matters is balance: air coming in low at the eaves and leaving high near the ridge. We recommend vents based on what the photos show and put the plan in your written scope.
Can you add ventilation without replacing my roof?
Often, yes. Vents can be repaired, replaced or added on their own. If your roof is close to the end of its life, we’ll say so and show you why it may be better to do the ventilation with a shingle roof replacement or a tile roof replacement.
Does a tile roof need attic ventilation too?
Yes. Any pitched roof over an attic, tile or shingle, needs air moving through it. Our roof inspection checks the vents on a tile roof the same way as on a shingle roof.
What about a flat roof?
