New Shingle Roof Installation · TotalShield®
A shingle roof installation is a complete new roof, planned from the deck up, for a new home, addition, ADU or garage, or for a switch from wood shakes or tile. QRS installs new shingle roofs across Los Angeles and Orange County with our TotalShield® Shingle System, settling ventilation, flashing and edge details before the first bundle goes on.
Overview
A new shingle roof starts with decisions that are hard to change later: how the attic will breathe, where the water will run and how the roof meets the walls and the rest of the house. On an ADU, a garage or a room addition, we plan the intake and exhaust vents, the flashing at each wall and the drip edge at the gutters before the shingles arrive. That way the shingles go onto a deck that’s ready for them, and the new roof looks like it belongs on your home.
Switching roof types counts as a new installation too. Moving from wood shakes or tile to shingles changes what the deck needs underneath, and the roof has to have enough pitch for shingles to shed water. Very shallow sections, like a porch roof or a patio cover, aren’t a fit for shingles and are better served by a flat roof installation. Whatever the project, you’ll have the scope and price in writing before work starts.
Our Process
How a new shingle roof comes together
Plan the roof
We go over the plans or the existing roof with you or your builder, from pitch and decking to vents and wall flashing.
- Pitch suited to shingles
- Intake and exhaust vent layout
- Wall and tie-in flashing details
Clear written quote
Your quote lists the shingle, underlayment and ventilation plan along with the price, so you and your builder work from the same plan.
Deck prep and underlayment
Once the deck is solid and clean, drip edge and underlayment go down to keep the structure dry until the shingles are on.
- Solid decking confirmed or added
- Drip edge at eaves and rakes
- Underlayment across the whole roof
Shingles, flashing and vents
Starter strips, shingles, step flashing, pipe boots and ridge vents go on to the manufacturer’s requirements, in clean, straight courses.
Final walkthrough
We review the finished roof with you or your builder, including the photos we took before each layer was covered.

Why Choose QRS for a New Shingle Roof?
On a new roof, the details are easiest to get right before anything is covered up, and if you’re converting an existing roof, a free roof evaluation is the place to start.
Ventilation planned from the start
Balanced intake and exhaust are designed into the roof rather than added later, because attic heat can age shingles early.
Careful tie-ins and wall flashing
Where an addition meets the existing roof or a stucco wall, we detail the flashing, including kick-out flashing where a roof edge runs into a wall, so water goes into the gutter instead of behind the wall.
A tidy site for the next trade
We clean up as we go, so builders and the trades that follow walk onto a clear site.
10-Year workmanship warranty
Every roof we install is backed by The QRS Guarantee, and we explain how it works in plain English at the final walkthrough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about shingle roof installation.
Do you pull the permits?
Yes. When your roofing project needs a building permit, we pull it for you.
Can the roof on my ADU match my house?
Usually, yes. We look for the same or a closely matching shingle and color, though a brand-new roof can look a little brighter next to one that’s been weathering for a while. If your main roof is near the end of its life, a shingle roof replacement at the same time gives the whole property one consistent look.
Can you replace a wood shake roof with shingles?
We can. Wood shakes are often laid over spaced boards, so solid decking goes on before the underlayment and shingles. You end up with a smoother, more uniform roof, and asphalt shingles are commonly fire-rated.
Do you work with builders and contractors?
We do, on new homes, additions and ADUs across Los Angeles and Orange County, with a written scope and price that builders can plan around. See how we work with contractors.
Should I switch my tile roof to shingles?
It can make sense if the tile is badly broken or you want a lighter roof, but it changes the character of the house. If you love your tile and the real problem is worn underlayment, a tile lift & relay keeps the tiles and renews what’s underneath.
Where do the attic vents go on a new shingle roof?
Intake vents sit low, at the eaves or soffits, and exhaust vents sit high, at or near the ridge. Balancing the two lets hot air escape as cooler air comes in, and we avoid mixing exhaust types on one attic, since that can short-circuit the airflow.
