In the inland valleys of Los Angeles and Orange County, roofs bake for much of the year, and a dark roof can run far hotter than the air on a sunny day. A cool roof stays much closer to it. On a flat roof that usually means a white cap sheet; on a shingle roof it can be a warm brown or a dark gray, because the cooling comes from reflective granules, not only from the color.
On a shingle roof replacement you can choose from eleven cool roof colors, from Shasta White to Midnight, every one rated SRI 20 or higher. The Solar Reflectance Index measures how well a roof sheds the sun’s heat. You can try them on a home photo in the shingle colors section.
A flat roof can be finished with a white or light reflective cap sheet on a torch-down roof, as on this white flat roof in Brentwood and this round flat roof in Hollywood Hills West.
California’s energy code (Title 24, Part 6) and the City of Los Angeles set cool roof requirements for some roof replacements. In Los Angeles, when more than half of a home’s roof is replaced, the building department’s bulletin calls for a cool roof product rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC); a tile lift & relay that resets the same tiles isn’t held to it. No. White is the most reflective, but cool-rated shingles come in many colors using reflective granules. The eleven shingle colors we offer are all cool roof colors rated SRI 20 or higher, from light to dark.
Sometimes. In the City of Los Angeles, a cool roof product rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council is required when more than half of a home’s roof is replaced, and California’s Title 24 energy code has cool roof rules for some other roofs, depending on the building, the roof slope and the climate zone. The permit for your job sets what applies, and we pull it for you.
In Los Angeles, the building department lists lifting the tiles, putting down new underlayment and resetting the same tiles as a job with no cool roof requirement. See tile lift & relay.
